My parents were good sports. They took me to dance lessons for years and years, knowing long before I did that grace was not something I would ever be able to claim; they called me princess, knowing long before I did that I was not the center of the universe; they forked out big bucks for my very first musical instrument, knowing long before I did that the trombone would be an even bigger pain in my butt than it looked. They played along, and they were good sports all the while.
One year, I decided that mothers and fathers were not the only people special enough to have an entire day dedicated to them. I announced, or maybe I demanded, that aunts should have a special day, too. They played along. We picked a day, I don't remember what day it was, and we planned a big party. We invited all the aunts we knew - my aunts, their aunts, cousin's aunts... there were decorations and food and even a cake. The highlight of the afternoon? I dressed up in one of my mom's old flowing, flowery dresses and "sang" (because my parents let me think I could, knowing long before I did that my tortured-coyote voice would be the death of any such career) some made-up-as-I-went melody to all the aunts, about all the aunts, for much longer than any of the aunts should possibly have been forced to bare. It was a fabulous party.
So on this Mother's Day weekend, as we're wishing all the mother's a happy day, let's remember to share some love with the aunts as well, because they play along, too. They attend unending dance recitals, they buy those forbidden sparkly princess heels and barbie make-up, they agree with you about quitting the stupid trombone when your parents tell you to stick it out... They play along, too.
Happy Day to my beautiful mother, my charming sister, and Miss Kitty - three of the most fabulous aunts I know.
(This morning at my house - Candy, Oscar, Mom, Miss Kitty, my perfect nephew and Sprinkles. Yes, you do see brownie pancakes, strawberry breakfast ice cream and Smurf glasses).

That is so nice. Happy Mother's day.
Wonderful sentiment for the weekend. I have one nice aunt who I should send a note or something. :)
What a sweet post (and I loved the way it was written)...
We never really understand how tolerant our parents were until we become a parent ourselves...
Happy Mother's Day!
Love it. This is a wonderful tribute to Aunts (and mothers and even fathers!) I really love it.
What a sweet post!!
Um...I want to hang out at your house, RAS. Seriously? Brownie pancakes and strawberry ice cream for breakfast. You are a woman after my own heart. I love it!
I was also glad to read that you liked both the last Chick Chat and We Heart Art. The vlog from bloggers all over the world was tough to coordinate, but I really loved the topic.
Thanks for your feedback, my friend. And Happy Mother's to you!

My sister has always been considered "the cool Aunt." I seriously think we need to dedicate a day to people like her because of what she's done for us over the years. Good idea! As for me, I'm celebrating by cleaning the screen porch, trimming plants that are seriously about to turn into mammoth tangles of growth because of recent heavy rains, and, of course, hosting my weekly Silly Sunday Sweepstakes. Please stop by, if you have a chance!
Happy Mother's Day RAS! That's right.....give it up for all the aunties. Woot, woot!
I LOVE my aunt. She is awesome! Happy Mother's day
Oh I must agree. Aunts are fabulous! One of mine is my godmother, at the age of 5 I dubbed her my "fairy godmother" and she has insisted on being called such ever since. Another has a spinning wheel and a full sized loom in her house and used to have me out for a week of arts and crafts in the summer. Another lives close by and was the one I ran to as a teenager... and now my kids have Aunts and they are so magical. Yay for Aunties!
I was reading this and automatically thought of some of my wonderful aunts who totally fit the bill!! You are so RIGHT!
This is a great idea! Aunts should get a special day... And next time you bring out the brownie pancakes you better call me!
Brownie pancakes!! *drool* My goodness but that sounds yummy and decadent!
As a professional aunt i'd like to second your idea of an Aunt's day. :) What a lovely idea! :)
Haha! That's so cute!
And the breakfast sounds A-MA-ZING! ;0)
Tortured coyote voice! Love that. I think I have it too!
